2010 Photography workshops by Nikos Economopoulos

Beirut

A bewildering composition of cultures and faiths, Beirut is perched on a sweep of coastline. With signs of inhabitance since long before the Phoenician Era, the city has witnessed countless transformations, including the latest shift from a half-ruined war-zone to a buzzing Mediterranean capital. While many parts of the centre have been entirely rebuilt and redeveloped, others bear the signs of the recent bombardments, with shelled-out buildings which are inhabited nonetheless. The contrasting faces of the city offer countless photographic opportunities.  The often unnamed paths lead to contradictory clusters of life that make up today’s Beirut.
